Sails

I ordered my sails late January 2023 and they turned up in Saskatoon March 21st 2023

I have not unpacked and inspected them as yet, I expect I will not be able to roll them out till later in the year once the snow is gone.  The corner of the main was run over by a forklift in transant from Annapolis to Saskatoon.  It all looks ok apart from a small tire mark on the sail

Frame work, fillets and hanging frames on jig.

I have been slowly picking away at the frames.  Completing them as far as possible on the bench which does add quite a bit of time for me.  They are all assembled as of September 09 2022 but still require finishing with with fillets and blocking.  I will then coat every thing with epoxy again as there are some areas with construction and and sanding that are now do not have epoxy on them, and some pieces I missed during the initial coating of all parts.  The screen shot from Facebook is from Martell Marine (Gregg Martell)  https://www.facebook.com/search/top/?q=martell%20marine  Every joint could be filleted, this is lot of work and material (time and money) all on its own.

Frames set up had to be readjusted once I used the side panels and base panel to check the length.

I added extra supports to the frame/jig to try and limit movement when applying stringers, as it was relatively to move a frame.

Mast and Rigging Selden package

Mast and Rigging arrived.

Post to fourm

Hull 133.
paid Mcintyre Adventure June 14th for mast and door-to-door shipment from Selden
mast shipped via ocean freight on or around the 26th of June 2022
mast arrived in Montreal, Canada, around August 8th and cleared customs, got to Canada freight forwarder around 07th of September 2022.
mast shipped rail to Saskatoon SK, Canada. (middle of Canada) arrived 19th of September 2022.
So from payment to delivery, three months. Costs over what was paid to Mcintyre Adventure, $536.10 for customs/brokerage and local taxes. All in $5954.89 Canadian dollars.
Maybe 20 emails, which were mostly me asking status, little confusion on who was paying port to Saskatoon, but Selden fixed it quickly.
Everything arrived in one piece. Looks like a great kit with lines and labels. I was very happy I went this route as I'm not experienced at building rigs (or boats..) I think if you were in a location that has a rigging company locally I would have worked with them but the nearest one to me is 1600kM away.
One thing to keep in mind, I'm part owner of a business that imports and exports; we are all set up with brokers etc. If you are doing it as an individual it could be a lot harder.

Keel Bulb

My plug half came from Dan hull 20

My dad made up the box to hold the concrete, he smoothed off the plug as it had few dents in it.

We half filled the mould with a mix of mortar I had lying around from house building projects,  we covered the plug in hair wax/pom to protect the plug.  Once half full we screwed the plug into the mould.  Once the mould was full we tapped the sides and plug to try and remove any air bubbles.

After 24hrs the plug was easily removed with no damage, there are a few air voids but nothing that can’t be filled or ignored.    We will leave it set for several weeks.

November 2022

Made melting pot/crucible out of a old propane (LPG) tank.

Removed valve, let stand for a week, put in fire pit till paint changed colour, cut opening in side, scavenged some pipe and bed rail for handles, cut base to to give a place to weld handles on.

December 2022

Purchased Lead from local scrap dealer, mostly unused sheet lead for flashing on roofs.

To seal the mould i used 3 coats of water glass sanding between coats to try and smooth it out.  DO not do this.   See why below.

I cut the lead up into more manageable pieces to go into the crucible and to make getting equal weights for both pours.  In the end I had 75kg for one and 74kg for the other, I figure with the goal weight being 72kg that should be close. 75KG was suggested by Peter K and Dan T.

Once in the tank I melted down one batch, I wanted to check how it would react once liquid hanging under  the crane and that it would all fit, surprising how little room 75KG of lead takes up once its melted down.

December 31st I the shop to my self and was able to set up the mould and crucible,

I levelled the mould and melted the lead, using two propane tiger torches and a oxy/acetylene torch with a rose bud tip, the oxy runs hot so you have to keep moving it around.

Once melted i dropped in 50grams or so of paraffin wax to flux/clean (do some thing)  apparently when the wax lights on fire it helps to draw out contamination from the lead.  There was more dross floating after the wax I presume it worked.

Transom Layout

https://youtu.be/cVDs2WrUOvY

Haven’t posted much to the blog as it’s all pretty repetitive at the moment but I wanted to write something about the transom so I have a record of it.

This is Pete’s boat Origami on the trailer on the way back from France may 2022.  He has all the elements I will likely have on mine so it’s a good clean reference versus the boats with all the parts attached.

This is my transom after cutting out the holes and adding supports.

Main Drain holes are 100mmx75mm
Secondary Drain holes are 100mm x 50mm the top
Of the hole is 295mm from the cockpit sole,  there is I think 60mm between these holes.
There is two 50mm round holes that will be for the bilge pump out put, they will be 40mm once finished.
There is two 50mm x 20mm cockpit seat drain holes.

For support for the ladder, outboard, running back stays I have added in additional support. I have also filled the very bottom area as it is not accessible and is a good place for water to sit.   I’ll have a to take a photo I do not have one with all the components in it. They are all visible in the tube video.
